Williamson County Judge Steve Snell Votes Against Own Salary Increase, Stresses Need for Fiscal Responsibility
GEORGETOWN, TX – Williamson County Judge Steve Snell recently reaffirmed his commitment to fiscal responsibility by voting against raising his own pay during a recent Commissioners Court meeting where salary adjustments for countywide elected officials were considered.
During the August 11 meeting, the Commissioners Court voted 3-2 on Item 75 to accept salary-study recommendations for elected officials for the Fiscal Year 2027 budget, while deliberately rejecting an additional 2% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). Despite a majority of the court voting to approve the market-adjusted salary resets, Judge Snell explicitly voted against the measure and opted out of accepting the pay increase for his own position.
“As public servants, our first obligation is to the taxpayers who entrust us with their hard-earned money,” said Judge Snell. “While I understand the need to ensure our county officials are fairly compensated to attract and retain strong leaders, I can’t in good conscience accept a pay increase for myself when there are so many other priorities that this increase could help address. My primary focus has always been and remains delivering essential services and maintaining fiscal discipline in government spending for the people of Williamson County.”
The salary-study recommendations presented by the county’s human resources department were designed to ensure the county remains competitive amid ongoing growth and rising regional costs. While county staff recommended a 2% COLA and a roughly 3% merit pool for civilian employees to produce a 5% average increase, the court debated whether elected officials should receive the same cost-of-living adjustments before ultimately excluding the extra 2% COLA for themselves.
By rejecting a pay increase, Judge Snell continues to lead by example, putting the needs of Williamson County residents ahead of himself, and reaffirming his belief that county government should serve the people—not the other way around.
